Step by step guide to drawing the BMW 740iL (1997)

The BMW 740iL (E38 generation) is a luxury sedan produced between 1994 and 2001. The “iL” stands for injected (fuel injection) and Lang (long wheelbase), meaning this model has extra rear legroom compared to the standard 740i.It’s powered by a V8 engine and is known for its elegant, balanced design—low, wide, and aerodynamic, with BMW’s signature kidney grilles and a timeless, classic sedan profile. The 740iL was a blend of comfort, technology, and sportiness, making it one of the most iconic BMWs of the 1990s.

Step 1: Base outline of the lower body

Start by sketching a long, low horizontal line to define the car’s ground clearance.
Add two large arcs where the wheels will go, one near the front and one near the back.
The shape is still very simple, just the bottom profile and wheel spaces.

Step 2: Add the roofline and main silhouette

Draw the roof, windshield, and trunk in one smooth outline.
Notice how the roof flows gently into the trunk with a balanced curve.
At this stage, you now have the car’s full side profile, but without details.

Step 3: Refine the front and rear bumper shapes

Add more definition to the nose (front bumper) and the rear (trunk/bumper).
Draw circles inside the wheel arches to mark the wheel placements.
The silhouette now looks more like a sedan.

Step 4: Add windows and the roofline detail

Draw the side windows: front windshield, rear windshield, and side glass.
Separate the front and rear windows with a vertical line for the B-pillar.
This step makes the shape look recognizably like a 4-door BMW.

Step 5: Add door outlines

Sketch the outlines of the front and rear doors.
Add the horizontal line running across the body (the shoulder line).
The car’s luxury sedan proportions are now clear.

Step 6: Refine details

Add more detail to the wheels: inner rims and spokes.
Define the headlights and taillights.
Sketch the side mirrors.
Add details to the bumpers and refine the body lines.

Step 7: Final line details

Deepen the details of the doors, handles, and trim lines.
Give the wheels a realistic rim style.
Add shading lines for depth and a sense of three-dimensionality.

Step 8: Coloring and background

Fill in the body with a glossy dark blue color.
Color the windows darker for a glass effect.
The wheels are shaded with metallic tones.
Add background elements like sky, trees, and ground to complete the illustration.
